Personal & Professional Effectiveness

The Personal and Professional Effectiveness (PPE) curriculum was developed using input from our Employer Partners and Advisory Council and is honed through continuous feedback from these stakeholders. This ensures that our students have the relevant, practical leadership skills and behaviours they need to be effective in the workplace. Anchored by the core pillars of self-management, engagement, complexity and innovation, the curriculum provides you with the opportunity to explore and develop skills and behaviours related to responsible leadership and career management. PPE is co-delivered by PPE faculty and Management Career Services.

Beginning with Orientation, the PPE curriculum is delivered in five modules that span the entire Corporate Residency MBA program. The PPE curriculum is innovative, applied and experiential.

Personal & Professional Effectiveness Framework

In Year 1, in preparation for the corporate residency, students are introduced to strategies that allow them to reflect on and evaluate learning experiences and make plans for their own personal development. Students are able to personalize their leadership development through individual effectiveness plans (IEPs)—assignments based on self-reflection, self-assessment and feedback from peers, faculty members and various assessment tools. Supported by the PPE curriculum, the IEP is a roadmap for personal and professional development. Through it, students are evaluated on their understanding of and improvement in areas such as emotional intelligence, thinking styles, stress management, time management, presentation skills, listening and feedback skills, trust building, coaching, problem identification and definition, systems thinking, creative thinking and more. PPE content also includes career management and development topics such as career assessment, effective job-search strategies, résumé development, interview coaching, networking, and self-marketing or entrepreneurial ventures.

Year 2 PPE continues after the corporate residency. With a focus on systems thinking, complexity, innovation and design, PPE 2 provides an opportunity to leverage the experiences, knowledge and skills gained from the workplace. Innovative leadership labs bring all dimensions of PPE together in a series of individual exercises and group challenges to help students deal with ambiguity, problem identification, problem solving, creativity and innovation, and understanding complex problems.
